Trekking

The Galapagos Islands are a perfect destination for those who enjoy hiking and exploring nature in a hands-on manner. There are several multi-day trekking adventures available. The treks will take tourists along Darwin’s trail or to explore the volcanoes.

Trekking on Isabela Island

This trek begins in the beautiful five-star hotel in the Ecuador city of Quito, where guests will gather and spend the night. From there, guests will fly to the airport on the Island of Baltra, then take a helicopter to Isabela Island.

The first morning on the island, trekkers will go to Centro de Crianza, a breeding ground for the famous Galapagos Island turtles. There are a few other short trips, including a chance to see flamingos at a salt lake. The trek part of the trip begins in earnest on the fourth day of the tour when the visitors are driving 18 kilometers to the base of the volcano Sierra Negra. A horse and guide lead visitors up to the crater of the volcano. A second volcano will be visited that day, as well, to Chico, which erupted as recently as 1979.

Guests on this trek tour will also spend time snorkeling, sport fishing, and trekking by water. On one day, visitors will be taken by boat to Santa Cruz where they will spend time visiting Puerto Aroya and hiking to Santa Cruz’s volcano.

Darwin’s Trail

This seventeen-day trek will amaze its guests with the same natural wonders that fascinated Charles Darwin 150 years ago. This trek will visit several different islands, exploring volcanoes and the underwater world.

The Darwin’s Trail trek will give visitors the chance to mingle with sea lions and giant turtles. An excursion to Cabo Rosa devotes an entire day to exploring the wonders of the Galapagos Islands sea life. One of the most interesting trekking adventures on this trip is through the bizarre lava landscape of the active volcano Sierra Negra. On the island Floreana, tourists will have the chance to wander through the old pirate caves. In Santa Cruz, trekkers will travel through tunnels made from lava.

Perhaps the highlight to the trek is a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Center. Here guests will have the chance to meet with leading scientists and researchers and ask questions about life on the islands. Travelers will also be able to see Lonesome George, the last surviving turtle of his particular species.
