Water Activities
The Galapagos Islands provide plenty of opportunities for those who wish to spend time in the water. It is an ideal location for snorkeling, sport fishing, and diving. Snorkeling While visitors expect to see amazing and unusual wildlife on land or in the skies, they are often surprised at the equally amazing life underneath the water. Snorkeling adventures allow visitors the opportunity to discover the undersea world with schools of angel fish, manta-rays, white-tipped reef sharks (which are docile animals), and feeding marine iguanas. Nearly every tour, cruise, or trek includes the opportunity to snorkel. The hotels even have snorkeling packages available. Some of the best places to snorkel on the Galapagos Islands include Rabida Island, with a snorkeling spot at the end of a volcano trail, and Devil’s Crown, a partially submerged volcano on the island of Floreana. Diving Devil’s Crown is also one of the best diving spots in the Galapagos Islands. It is hard to define a true “best dive” among the islands. Anywhere a diver can submerge himself ends up being a good dive. It is considered one of the world’s premier diving locations, in fact. Experienced divers will want to investigate Cousin Rock, Roca Redonda, and Wolf Island. Cousin Rock is a rock that is 9 meters high and 30 meters long. The currents are not usually strong, and the area is home to barracuda and different species of rays. Roca Redonda is a round rock with strong currents and home to hammerhead sharks. On the surface, sea lions enjoy sunbathing on the rocks. Wolf Island is the primary diving spot in the Galapagos Islands. The currents are extremely strong. Occasionally, divers will witness the large schools of hammerheads that swim in this cove, with schools as large as 500 sharks. Other Water Activities Underwater sports are not the only water activities to be found in the Galapagos Islands. Many believe the best way to experience the Galapagos Islands is to kayak on the sea, which gives paddlers an intimate view of the islands. The beaches near the red mangroves and the Red Mangrove Inn also provide excellent surfing and windsurfing opportunities. info@galapagosgetaways.com |
